Inter-District football has been a key element of the Middlesex Schools’ Football Association’s activities since its formation. The U15 Star Shield and U14 Bower Cup have been competed for since 1932; the Batchelor Cup was added after the Second World War. Former England internationals Denis and Leslie Compton donated the U13 trophy in 1951.

The competitions have evolved over time, in the same way that the County Boundaries now are different to those in place originally. Competitions have been added and discontinued as the demand for Representative Football has changed and with a smaller number of teams participating in those tournaments still running, the format has altered with League formats replacing knockout Cups.

The most recent change was the repurposing of the Alf Gant Cup into a ‘trophy event’ for U11 teams. It had been the County Cup for Primary Schools for more than 40 years but in the years following The FA Youth Review a decision was taken to discontinue season-long tournaments at U11. The Batchelor Cup and Alf Gant Cup serve as two round-robin trophy events for U11 Representative Teams.
